A group of French architecture students designed the Arctic Harvester as a floating ‘hydroponic farm’ and village.
Meriem Chabani, Etienne Chobaux, John Edom, and Maeva Leneveu teamed up to produce the circular-shaped floating village that holds 800 people and work.
The structure uses the nutrient-rich melting ice as water to grow crops for local consumption by Greenland (currently shipping the majority of its produce from overseas).
The farm has two energy systems. The first is solar that takes advantage of almost 24hr daylight during the summer and an ‘osmotic system’ able to generate power from a mix of saltwater and freshwater.
It is expected to slowly drift within the circulating ocean currents between Greenland and Canada.
